In a move to provide a common language for secure, compliant transactions for AI agents, Google announced the launch of Agent Payments Protocol (AP2), an open and shared protocol for agent-led payments across multiple platforms.
AP2 is designed in collaboration with more than 60 leading payments and technology companies including Coinbase, Mastercard, Revolut, American Express, Ant International, Etsy, Adyen, Salesforce, PayPal and more.
In a blog post, published on September 16, Google calls Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) a payment-agnostic framework for users, merchants, and payments providers to transact with confidence across all types of payment methods.
The technology giant also highlighted the AP2 x402 extension, a production-ready solution for agent-based crypto payments, developed through Coinbase, Ethereum Foundation, MetaMask and other leading organizations’ collaborative efforts.
AP2 x402 extension enables AI agents across the web3 ecosystem to transact securely in stablecoins and other cryptocurrencies.
The protocol is built on Mandates—tamper-proof, cryptographically-signed digital contracts that serve as verifiable proof of a user's instructions.
AP2 is aimed at providing a universal and trusted foundation to fuel a new era of AI-driven commerce.
